I've been to your little burg before.. nice place. Hot as stink but I guess you're used to it. We used to spend time most winters on St. Simons before the wife got too sick to make the trek south from the frozen north.
I live in Gwinnett. I go up to Athens then go through the woods on US-29, GA-15 S, and GA-251 S to GA Hwy 99. It is shorter but takes just over 5 hours but it avoids any 75 construction and the rush hour traffic that will be experiences somewhere on your route.
