We're hosed.

  1. Great theory. There is no question that the ability to self govern can be illustrated in seemingly insignificant behaviors. After 30 plus years working in grocery stores, I can say that it is the very upper income levels and the lowest income levels that seem to be the most incapable of self governance based on The Shopping Cart Theory.

  3. I always have figured that the people who work at those places that have shopping carts are not my mother, and anyway, she was the one who taught me to take care of things that I took out of place. My wife has learned that I refuse to just abandon my cart or hers, but will either return it to the cart corral, or to the store, if there is no place for the cart, like at a convenience store we have at our corner. We buy a lot of things there, just because it is like the name, convenient. And we often take the cart to the car, and I refuse to simply leave it at the curb. I also take in any carts that others have left, when I go into the store. The ladies working there appreciate that gesture, especially if it is raining or snowing. And it costs me nothing other than a second and a bit of kindness.

  4. What I am seeing is a lot of old and injured seniors who need the support of the cart to get their stuff to the car but leave it right next to the car door so they have something else to support them. Sucks getting old.

    1. I gladly return their carts. It's the least I can do.
