After reading his manifesto, the poor guy was certainly acting irrationally. The design of the bomb seems to have not intended to kill but to "send a message" as the bomber himself stated. He died of a gunshot wound so the bomb wouldn't have been planted by somebody trying to kill him.
It's not possible to rationalize how irrational people act. The poor guy was probably pretty screwed up. PTSD?
