I can't remember the scene specifically, but if he just left the two top thumbtacks in place, lifted the poster up and climbed in carefully, he could just lower the poster and nobody would have known without walking up to the poster and lifting it. As I said I don't remember the details. Now if all 4 tacks were in place, that's another thing entirely.
Ok...just watched the scene on U tube. Very hard to tell. He rips the poster off so violently that you really can't tell if all 4 thumbtacks (or similar) were present....just that the poster was hanging over the hole, and was stable enough but thin enough to allow a rock to penetrate.
